Summary

General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. General Excavating specializes in the construction of underground utilities, natural gas distribution, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.
 

General Excavating is seeking a highly motivated Yardman to support daily yard operations. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized yard, operating a loader and other equipment to move and stage materials, assisting with loading and unloading, and supporting shop and field crews as needed.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Inspects equipment and other materials on all returns, noting any lost and/or damaged equipment not previously noted and reports immediately.
  • Operates equipment such as wheel loaders, forklifts, semi-trucks / trailers, side dumps, dump trucks and other equipment, as assigned.
  • Perform minor repairs and construction tasks as needed.
  • Assists in loading and unloading of trucks, ensuring all materials are properly secured.
  • Works with foreman, mechanics and other operations staff to coordinate heavy equipment relocations from various jobsites or General Excavating’s equipment yard to optimize fleet utilization and project deliveries.
  • Ensures proper and safe loading, unloading and securing of oversized/overweight equipment to avoid shifting, loosening, or falling during transport. Must have ability to tarp, chain or strap loads using appropriate securement and binding for the haul.
  • Use basic equipment operating skills necessary to load and unload oversized/overweight parts, equipment or materials.
  • Completes and files all vehicle pre/post-trip inspections and log items as required by government agencies and General Excavating in a precise and timely manner.
  • Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and governmental regulations.
  • Engages in continuous learning and training and provides mentorship to crew members to promote professional growth, technical proficiency, and a culture of safety and quality.
  • Special projects or work, as assigned.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Heavy equipment hauling experience required.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class A CDL and a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) to pass and maintain insurability guidelines.
  • Ability to pass and maintain DOT/FMCSA requirements regarding pre/post-employment drug screens and DOT physicals.

 

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Valid Class A CDL with clean driving record.

 

Education and/or Experience

Four (4) years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

                                                                                                                                             

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
