Summary
General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the state of Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, natural gas distribution, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil construction of bridge and concrete structures.
General Excavating is searching for a highly motivated Pipelayer. This position will be responsible for installing and repairing water, sanitary, and storm pipelines under the supervision of their Foreman or Superintendent. This role requires attention to detail, a commitment to safety procedures, and the ability to work in physically demanding environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Install, align, and connect pipe systems for water, sewer, and storm drainage
- Grade and level trench bottoms using hand tools to ensure proper slope and bedding
- Lay pipe according to blueprints and specifications, ensuring joints are properly sealed
- Use lasers, transits, or other instruments to set elevations and grades
- Cut and bevel pipes using hand tools or power saws
- Check pipe slopes and alignment using levels or lasers
- Backfill and compact trenches as work progresses
- Load, unload, and transport piping and related materials
- Support the crew with general site tasks as needed, including dewatering, excavation, and safety setup
- Follow all company and site-specific safety policies
- Maintain tools and equipment in proper working conditions
- Maintain open communication with the crew leader regarding progress and site conditions
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of pipe materials (PVC, RCP, ductile iron, HDPE) and fittings
- Familiarity with trench safety and confined space protocols
- Ability to read and interpret plans and grade sheets
- Strong understanding of safe trenching and excavation practices
- Ability to work cooperatively with a team in a fast-paced environment
- Physical endurance and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Clear and respectful communication with team members
- Attention to detail and ability to detect installation issues
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Education and Work Experience
- Minimum of 1 year experience in underground utility installation preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and physical exam
- OSHA 10 or 30 preferred
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.
