Summary

General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. General Excavating specializes in the construction of underground utilities, natural gas distribution, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.

 

The HR Generalist will be responsible for a wide range of human resources functions including recruitment, onboarding, employee experience, reporting, and compliance. This individual will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of HR activities across General Excavating.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Administers Department of Transportation compliance processes, including maintaining Driver Qualification Files, managing running Clearinghouse pre-employment and limited queries, and processing/filing Certificates of Violations.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and company employment requirements by tracking Affirmative Action data.
  • Conducts bi-annual I-9 audits and ensures accurate completion, submission, and record retention of employment eligibility documentation.
  • Maintains employee records and HR documentation, including emergency contact information and other personnel data.
  • Assists with safety recordkeeping and documentation, including organization and maintenance of required safety files and records.
  • Maintains labor law postings, policies, contracts, and regulatory documentation to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Participates in recruiting efforts such as career fairs and engagement alongside other HR team members.
  • Supports intern recruitment and engagement initiatives in partnership with the HR team.
  • Tracks employee referral bonus programs and coordinates related scheduling and communication with payroll and HR leadership.
  • Distributes and manages physical employee mail and correspondence.
  • Processes post-orientation onboarding tasks including I-9 submissions, new hire reporting, and required HR system data entry.
  • Communicates with new employees to confirm orientation details and onboarding requirements.
  • Facilitates new hire orientation sessions when needed to ensure consistent onboarding experiences.
  • Supports employee lifecycle processes including termination reporting.
  • Coordinates exit interviews for non-managerial roles.
  • Assists with employee engagement surveys, compiles responses, and supports reporting on engagement metrics.
  • Tracks and maintains records related to verbal and written employee warnings and other administrative HR actions.
  • Maintains accurate HR records and generates reports related to compliance, recruiting, and employee lifecycle activities.

Education and/or Experience

  • Two (2) years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Human Resources or a closely related field.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for drafting clear and concise emails, reports, employee handbooks, and policies. The ability to interact effectively with employees, management, and external partners is critical. Ability to maintain a professional tone in all communications, especially in sensitive or confidential situations. Skill in proofreading and reviewing documents for accuracy, ensuring clear communication in legal and policy matters.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to perform basic calculations related to payroll, benefits administration, and compensation analysis. Ability to assist in HR budgeting, track expenditures for recruitment, training programs, grant programs, and forecasting needs.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not exposed to weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position is split between the Lincoln and Omaha offices and requires regular travel between both locations.
