Summary

General Excavating is seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead and grow the company’s alternate delivery construction initiatives while driving business development and expansion of operations. This role is responsible for overseeing design-build and contractor-at-risk contracts, managing project management and business development staff, and developing strategic client relationships with owners, engineers, and public agencies. The Senior Project Manager will also identify new opportunities to expand the company’s footprint, mentor staff, and contribute to long-term executive-level strategy. This role is part of a VP-track career path with increasing responsibility over operations, business development, and strategic planning.

This position is intended for a highly experienced construction professional with demonstrated leadership ability with the ability to increase responsibility over department operations, business development, and strategic planning. The Senior Project Manager will lead the company’s alternate delivery construction initiatives, oversee design-build and contractor-at-risk contracts, manage project management and business development staff, develop strategic client relationships with owners, engineers, and public agencies, and identify new opportunities to expand the company’s footprint. The role also includes mentoring staff and contributing to long-term executive-level strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead and manage alternate delivery construction projects, including design-build, construction-manager-at-risk, and design-assist contracts, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and profitability.
  • Oversee project management and business development staff, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance management.
  •  Build and maintain relationships with owners, engineers, architects, and public agencies to secure new work and expand company presence.
  • Participate in client and stakeholder meetings, present company capabilities, and negotiate contracts.
  • Direct on-site personnel engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications and plans, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.
  • Study project specifications, plans, and staffing/equipment needs to coordinate construction procedures for optimal efficiency.
  • Manage procurement of materials, tools, and rental equipment to conform to project schedules.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and mentor employees and contractors.
  • Inspect and review work in progress to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, schedules, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor project performance, labor productivity, equipment utilization, budgets, and margins, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Prepare, review, and approve project estimates, schedules, budgets, and change orders.
  • Investigate and report accidents, delays, or damages at construction sites and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with project safety programs, OSHA regulations, and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Support executive leadership in strategic planning, forecasting, and long-term growth initiatives.
  • Analyze project costs and schedules and provide recommendations to improve construction methods and profitability.
  • Prepare reports on progress, labor, materials, and equipment usage, and adjust work schedules as necessary.
  • Proficient in estimating software for project bidding; experience with the HCSS suite preferred but not required.
  • Oversees and reviews subordinate estimates for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with plans, specifications, and job requirements, ensuring alignment with contract terms and company estimating standards.
  • Maintains clear, high-level communication with team members, support personnel, and executive management.

 

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 5–10 years of senior project management experience with alternate delivery (design-build, CMAR) projects.
  • Proven experience in business development and client relationship management for public and private infrastructure work.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, mentor staff, and grow company operations.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and strategic planning skills.
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, with responsibility for profitability and client satisfaction.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.
