General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the state of Nebraska. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.   

General Excavating has a large and diverse equipment fleet. Maintenance of such a large and expensive fleet requires a well-structured and properly executed maintenance program. The Equipment Manager is responsible for coordinating, facilitating, and executing equipment activities in support of all construction projects. This position provides overall management of fleet vehicles and construction equipment, while ensuring safety and quality standards.  This position helps to ensure the profitability of General Excavating projects through improved equipment utilization and mechanical reliability.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Provides field leadership and management of equipment maintenance and readiness to meet specific project needs.
  • Controls and tracking all aspects of equipment cost.
  • Provides management with internal equipment and rental recap reports.
  • Accountable for the training, development, coaching and morale of direct reports.
  • Works with foreman, mechanics and other operations staff to coordinate heavy equipment relocations from various jobsites or General Excavating’s equipment yard to optimize fleet utilization and project deliveries.
  • Accountable for best utilization of internal and external equipment.
  • Assists and provides recommendations for procurement of new equipment purchases, as well as rental pieces.
  • Works within company data systems to record and track equipment maintenance and utilization on a weekly basis.
  • Prepares or reviews reports on progress and costs related to equipment used and adjusts maintenance schedules as indicated by reports.
  • Investigates, documents and reports damage, accidents, or delays related to equipment or fleet vehicles to ensure that proper procedures are being followed.
  • Implements new or modified plans for equipment moves in response to delays, bad weather, or construction site emergencies.
  • Provides effective and accurate communication to supervisors, owners, subcontractors and subordinates by telephone, email, in person or written form to ensure details about equipment and company information is efficiently relayed.
  • Monitors compliance with internal procedures and project safety program requirements.  Documents and ensures corrective measures are implemented as necessary.
  • Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and governmental regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor or manager.

 

Qualifications

  • Must possess a minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical related field.
  • Knowledge of construction safety and current federal and provincial requirements.
  • Broad knowledge of engineering and construction methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Basic computer skills.
  • Must possess strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness, ability, and enthusiasm for travel, sometimes on short notice.
  • Must be a self-starter and highly motivated with the desire to do what it takes to get the job done.

Education and/or Experience

Five (5) years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Valid Class A CDL with clean driving record, or the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 60 days of hire.
