General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the state of Nebraska. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.   

General Excavating is searching for a highly motived and experienced Utilities Foreman in underground utility site work. This position must be experienced in horizontal directional drilling / boring, as well as locating utilities and managing jobs and crews.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • The Utilities Foreman performs a wide variety of manual duties in support of telecommunication construction.

 

  • Performs a variety of physically strenuous on road / highway, and heavy civil construction sites to prepare worksites for telecommunications cabling.

 

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout of project and tasks are accurate as defined by project owner.

 

  • Studies specifications to plan procedures for appropriate construction methods on the basis of project start and completion time. 

 

  • Locates underground utilities and file locate requests to eliminate potential hazards for cabling work installation.

 

  • Responsible for providing updates, damages, issues, daily progress reports to the construction coordinator and/or project manager.

 

  • Digs ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact earth to grade specifications, using shovels and other heavy equipment.

 

  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools, clean and prepare sites, set braces to support the sides of excavations, clean up rubble and debris and remove waste materials to maintain a clean jobsite and ensure site is secured each day to eliminate safety hazards.

 

  • Responsible for providing daily worksheets and work logs to field supervisor.

 

  • Measures distances, set elevations and install pipe to grade as defined in drawings and specifications.

 

  • Practices preventive maintenance of tools and equipment by performing daily inspections of equipment to determine their working condition, oiling moving parts, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment as directed or specified in the operator's manual, and returning damaged tools and equipment for repair or replacement.

 

  • Procures materials, tools and rental equipment at specified times to conform to work schedules.

 

  • Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment and in a timely manner.

 

  • Confers with supervisory personnel, owners, engineers, contractors, inspectors, material suppliers and/or equipment dealers to resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints or construction problems to improve construction methods and performance.

 

  • Inspects or reviews work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications, schedules and safety compliance.

 

  • Provides effective and accurate communication to supervisors, owners, subcontractors and subordinates by telephone, email, in person or written form to ensure project details and company information is efficiently relayed.

 

  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy).

 

  • Must be able to work in loud, noise-filled environments.

 

  • Responsible for assigning tasks to laborers and operators and supervises crew in the field as needed to ensure work is being completed as defined by project owner.

 

  • Monitors compliance with project safety program requirements.  Documents and ensures corrective measures are implemented as necessary. Ensures proper safety and incident procedures are followed.

 

  • Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and governmental regulations.

 

Qualifications

 

Possess and maintain a Class A CDL.

 

A clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) to pass and maintain company insurability guidelines.

 

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Minimum of 4 years of recent foreman or equivalent experience.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.

 

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.
