Summary
General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the Midwest. General Excavating specializes in the construction of underground utilities, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.
General Excavating is looking for a highly motivated and skilled diesel mechanic. The ideal candidate would have a minimum of three years of Diesel Mechanic experience. Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance/repair of a fleet of heavy-duty diesel trucks and heavy equipment; repair/maintenance of equipment that services the fleet operations; ensure that all repairs/maintenance to equipment are performed in compliance with General Excavating’s safety and compliance standards, and with all federal and state regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Troubleshoot and diagnose causes of malfunction and perform repairs to manufacturer specifications including but not limited to engines, transmissions and clutches, drive-line, differential, steering and suspension, fuel and ignition system, exhaust systems, intake systems, electrical systems, brake systems, mechanical and electrical systems under the guidance of fleet supervisor or shop manager.
- Perform required and preventative inspections on trucks and other equipment to maximize the safety, reliability, and cost efficiency throughout the life cycle of the fleet.
- Reads job order and observes and listens to vehicle in operation to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures.
- Strictly follows inspections protocol checklist and keeps detailed records of all serviced vehicles and equipment.
- Performs all maintenance and repairs in accordance with schedules, policies and standards set forth by the Company and equipment specifications.
- Overhaul gas or diesel engines.
- Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on vehicles and equipment, and makes adjustments.
- Lubricates moving parts and conducts drive tests of trucks or equipment to verify performance. Makes adjustments to controls and systems as needed and ensures conformance to specifications.
- Fabricates special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings.
- Accurately tracks inventory and maintains a clean workplace.
- Performs minor body repairs and maintains the appearance of vehicles by cleaning, washing and painting.
- Full servicing of vehicles and equipment.
- Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety and combustion control standards.
- Demonstrate the highest level of safety standards and hold others accountable for upholding best safety practices.
- Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and governmental regulations.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Minimum of three years related experience and/or training.
Knowledge and experience with hydraulic systems.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
Valid driver’s license with safe driving record. CDL Class B or above preferred.
